Gin, Magpies, and the Compulsion to Write

Sarah has been a police officer, a singer, and once – thanks to her school choir – found herself performing in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on the West End. She met her husband through music (she sang, he played keyboards, their rockstar dreams did not pan out), and now they live in a Brentwood village with their two daughters. She writes fiction that delves into human relationships, often with a bittersweet edge.

She loves Thai curry, gin (but never with cucumber, because that would be an abomination), live music, and the smell of chlorine, but has little patience for double-dippers, toilet rolls facing the wrong way, or bad manners. If she knocks one elbow, she must tap the other. If she sees a lone magpie, she salutes – because some superstitions just aren’t worth risking.

Her ideal evening involves cooking with music on (and a G&T in hand), movie nights with her family, and plotting ways to make readers laugh, cry, or both at once. And, of course, writing – because, for her, it’s a compulsion. She couldn’t stop if she tried.

Notebook and Pen

"I hope you will find the cracks in the world and wedge them wider, so the light of other suns shines through; I hope you will keep the world unruly, messy, full of strange magics; I hope you will run through every open Door and tell stories when you return."
— Alix E. Harrow, The Ten Thousand Doors of January
